What is a Full Spectrum Doula?
A full spectrum doula offers inclusive, holistic, continuous care across the reproductive and life cycle spectrum — through in/fertility, bleed, birth, death, parenting and everything in between — depending on their individual expertise and offerings.
And while each birth worker or doula usually specialises in a particular area of care — doula work in itself is broad and offers a multitude of individualised offerings across the life cycle.
Doula’s are not only there for women and birthing people bringing wriggling babies into this world or for nurturing new (and new again) families in postpartum.
We are also there for the contraction and the expansion — honouring birth, death and re-birth, rites of passage that crack us wide open. We are there for the early births, the losses, the heart breaks and the break throughs. We are there for the learning and the un-learning. We are there to witness, to hold space and to listen without judgement. We are there to advocate, to fight for reproductive justice, to uphold informed consent and decision making.
Doula’s can — and should be — for the full spectrum of joyful, murky, messy, full-feeling, heart-expanding human thresholds and transitions. For all bodies. For all families. For all people.
